Out of Door Den

Grand Rapids, MI  2020

Description:

Out of Door Den, at it's simplest is a single family backyard shed, designed for entertaining guests or relaxing as a family. Its entirety (everything except the bar stools) was designed and constructed by studio RADish.

Concept:

Out of Door Den, is designed to be a modern out door version of a 1950's suburban den. Den's were typically buried, both in plan and elevation, within the home.  These chapels of televised worship stored the families collections of board games, written texts, houseplants, and sometimes the father's memorabilia.  Dens would come to be divided, consumed, or re-assigned contingent upon evolving familial normalcy.  Out of Door Den is a reflection on family; how pillars of the home become defunct while simultaneously constructing new ones in their own image.
